Another festival for me
These guys were pretty loud…good thing I had a good set of ear plugs with me!
My last blogpost was related to the Malmö Festival, which is put on by the City of Malmö for a whole week with lots of food trucks, many performances and other culture events, including big artists playing in front of tens of thousands of spectators. This blogpost is about another festival in Malmö. Same city, but VERY different! The NGBG festival is put on by volunteers and the participating artists and culture workers, many of them independent artists, and it’s held along a rather worn down street called Norra Grängesbergsgatan, filled with car washes, workshops and second hand stores. Over a weekend in early September there were at least 400 different events at well over 20 stages, housed inside the workshops and stores where normally cars are serviced, as well as on temporary stages along the street that was blocked of with a huge cargo container at each end of the street.
This was a pretty effective blockage at one end of the festival area!
My friend Camilla was hosting a little DIY art event, open the the public. I think this fella was one of her first customers/clients.
It’s such a cool vibe and I’ve loved going there through the years. This year I had read that events would start on the Friday at 4 PM, so that’s when I showed up. However, this year all the logistics of putting up stages, scaffolding and other infrastructure had been delayed for several hours due to a massive downpour in the morning. So not a whole lot was going on for the first few hours as I walked around there. However, eventually I did get a few pictures of performers and people enjoying the festival. This time I didn’t stay well into the night when most of the performances took place or came back on the Saturday for the full day of events, but I got some of the vibe while I was there on the Friday afternoon.
