A Festival Stroll

It’s been almost a month since I took these pictures at the annual Malmö Festival, but better late than never…right? ;-) I have been to almost every edition of this festival since it started 40 years ago (!). Hard to believe it’s been that long…I guess it that makes me…(mumbles) years old today. Anywho…it was a warm and very pleasant August Monday evening when members from the Malmö Photographic Society gathered at the Gustaf Adolf square. We usually do a very loosely organized photowalk at the festival to start the season, and this year was no exception.

Dennis, my birthday twin and other fellow club members gathering at the square before the photowalk.

Anne-Grethe, our chairwoman greeting club members before sending them out into the crowds to take photos.

We were given a theme to work on for the evening that I am not sure is easily translated to English, but I’ll give it a go. “Det går som en dans” the expression describes something that goes very well, while the actual words translates as “It goes like a dance”. So we could interpret that however we wanted. And we did.

I chose to head down to one of the stages where a lot of dancing happened, and I figured that shooting long shutter images and blurring the dancers would work well to show their movements and speed. I am sure I would have gotten a few keepers if I was able to work the scene, but a minute or two after I got down there the band took a 30 minute break…so I only ended up with a few shots.

Some don’t even need a band playing to start dancing!

I wasn’t too disappointed that I didn’t get more moving dancers images; there were so many other photo opportunities to explore in the streets. I wondered around the festival area for a little while and shot what I thought were interesting looking people and situations while the light took on that lovely golden/reddish hue around me. Definitely a few hours well-spent before it was time to leave the city center and head home in the fading light of a summer evening.
