Last blog post I showed some of my digital images from the recently finished Malmö Festival, the annual event held in Malmö, Sweden (for the last 35 years). I took analog shots too during my visits to the event, but I had yet to develop them at the time. I’ve done that now and scanned them as well, so this week’s entry in this blog is all about the analog shots I took, both with my 135 camera (a Canon 650) as well as my 120 camera (a Kiev 60).Read More
There are certain things that happen annually that with time become markers of where in the year we are (other than for instance Midsummer, which funnily enough is in the middle of…yep…summer). One of these is the Malmö Festival which happens in August, just before the kids go back to school for the fall semester. So in a way it marks the end of summer for us here in the southernmost part of Sweden. It certainly feels that way today as I write this, with rain outside the window and temperatures that barely reach 20 degrees Celsius!Read More
Half the year is now done and I’ve amassed 181 pictures in my project. Just 184 to go and this year will be done. “Just” 184 pictures. That does feel like quite a challenge when you put it like that, but I also thought it’d be tricky to put up the first 181. It’s actually been a pretty relaxed project this year so far, mostly because I’ve allowed myself some slack when it comes to what camera to use. No longer restricting myself to just cell phone shots was a good thing for sure! It’ll (probably) be pretty smooth sailing to the finish line I think.
(Although by writing that I’ve no doubt jinxed myself in some weird way…aw well…we’ll see what happens!).Read More
Through the 3 years I’ve shot film in earnest I’ve tried a few film stocks, but mostly shot on Fomapan 400, HP5+ or Kodak Tri-X. A little while ago I shot my last roll of Fomapan 400 which meant it was time to get started on the most recent acquisition, my supply of Rollei Retro 400 S, a film stock that I heard about from Ted Vieira when he was a guest on the Negative Positives podcast. I shot a roll of that stock in my medium format camera a while back and enjoyed it so I figured I’d give it a go in my 135 cameras too.Read More
A little while back I went on a lot of different group photowalks, both in my photo club, in various Facebook groups as well as through Instawalks with the IgersMalmoe group/collective/heap of photographers (whatever noun fits). Lately I’ve done more solo meanderings through cities with my camera; not because I find anything wrong with group photowalks, it’s just something that’s evolved over time.Read More
For many years it’s been a tradition for me to go across the ocean to Denmark’s capital Copenhagen at the tail end of April to photograph at the Sakura (or Cherry Tree in Japanese) Festival. It’s usually quite the colorful experience with lots of people in kimonos, martial arts outfits (for the displays) or various anime and manga outfits. I’ve covered it with my digital gear many times…so this time I figured I’d have a go at it with my 1970s Canon TLb and Fomapan 400 film. It is also the one camera in my gear bag that I am not very careful with…so if the projected downpour would have a disastrous go at it…well…I have other cameras I can use.Read More
It’s been a bit longer than usual between this post and my previous one (about podcasts) and even longer between this one and my previous photography related post. I think I got hit with the almost annual it’s-winter-and-it’s-too-dark-to-shoot-anything-and-why-am-I-even-bothering-with-this-hobby symptoms. I’m through that now though (I hope), especially with a few sunny days that we’ve had in the last week or so! Of course when I write this first part of the blog post it’s pouring down with rain again, but i guess you can’t have it all (and I am not outside in it, but rather inside, tapping away at my keyboard)!Read More
The 365 project is back! Actually it never left after I took the 365th picture of 2018, I just kept going into the new year. I didn’t feel done with my one picture per day thing, partly because I didn’t upload the pictures daily during the year - I just stored them on my computer and inserted them into my book file, yet to be printed.
This year though, the still somewhat new and shiny 2019, I am going back to uploading the daily image to my Instagram account. I am widening my sources of images too, no longer restricting myself to cell phone shots only. As good as the Samsung S8+ is, I have snapped quite a few good ones with my (to me) new Kiev 60 medium format camera too, so I will include a few of them here and there as the year progresses, and possibly other analog photos as well.Read More
For a few years a while back I went to every annual summer Viking market at Foteviken just south of Malmö to take pictures, because as a history nerd I thought it was so cool to see people in (at least somewhat period accurate) Viking costumes, re-enacting the time period. Then I felt I had photographed that to the best of both my abilities as well as my interest (mostly the latter), but in 2018 I thought 'I haven't shot the event with analog equipment, so that might be a new challenge!'Read More
When a fellow board member of my photo club said that this semester we'd have a "Develop with Coffee" class It certainly wasn't the first time I'd heard of the phenomenon known as "Caffenol". I'd even seen a video or two of it on YouTube, but I hadn't tried it myself before. So I figured, why not give it a go. The worst that could happen would be that a film would be ruined and I wouldn't have those particular pictures...really not the end of the world.Read More
