Season Closer by the Sea

One of the nicer traditions in my photo club here in southernmost Sweden is that we close out the spring season with a gathering outdoors where we cook hot dogs and have a beer or two (non-alcoholic options available too of course). We are usually out by the ocean since it’s right there for us, and this year’s gathering was no exception. We were blessed with pretty nice weather and the hot dogs were great, as was the company! One of the possible themes for the evening’s photography was “structures and surfaces” so some of the photos in this post were inspired by this theme.

Cold by the coast

When the sun shines on a cold winter morning (the thermometer was at -6 C or 21 F) it feels just right to pack oneself and the constant photo partner (a.k.a. Dad) into the car and head down to the coast at Falsterbo. There’s just something special about seeing that horizon line that makes me feel more harmonious inside!

Season closer by the seaside

In my photo club we have a tradition of finishing the spring semester with an outdoor event with hot dogs, beer and a short little photowalk, and this year was no exception. We were originally going to meet up in the largest park in Malmö, Sweden, but had to relocate at the last minute because we realized that there’d be a huge running event through that park and the area where we’d set up our portable grills. That would not have worked, so it was a good thing there was a different place, where we’d been before, that worked very well.

So nice to be out by the seaside!

So nice to be out by the seaside!

This winter it has been rare to see shadows on the ground when you wake up in the morning; it has been a VERY dark and wet season…either lots of snow and ice or more common around here…rain, rain and more rain! Therefore I jumped at the chance to get some photos taken with shadows in them and to get a bit of fresh air as well…without having to tote an umbrella around.

The 365 Project Mark VI - Month Ten

The fall color season hit us with a vengeance this year, bringing out the yellows, reds and browns with full force. I hadn’t really been out all that much shooting those colors for a few years, because I felt that I’d done it already and I was just trying to re-heat a souffle. This year though I guess I had been “away” from that sort of photography enough that it felt somewhat new and interesting again. Hence October of 2021 had lots of fall colors among my 365 images.

The 365 Project Mark VI - Month Three

One fourth of the year is now done and over and things feel a bit more cheerful than they did a month ago at the end of February. I don’t know if it is the longer days, the warmer temperatures or the fact that vaccines are finally being distributed in larger and larger numbers…or a combination of all those things. My guess is that it is the combo! Anywho…time again for a blog post with some thoughts about a few of the pictures I uploaded for my 365 project, this time for the month of March.

Ice, Ice, Ice Baby!

First…apologies for the title…it was too obvious a pick (also, now you’ve got that dreadful Vanilla Ice cover on your brain for awhile…congratulations!)

The weather this winter has been…interesting. As I write this during the last week of February we have 12 degrees Celsius (54 Fahrenheit) and birds are chirping away outside while some tree thought it a good idea to release pollen into the air, way too early for my eyes to appreciate it. A week and a half ago we had -10 Celsius (14 Fahrenheit) at night and it was definitely thick longjohns time if you wanted to spend extended amounts of time outside in the dark!

Visiting the Ale Stone Ship

One of the sad facts of this summer is that long distance traveling is pretty much out of the question. I certainly wouldn’t have minded going overseas this summer, but nope…not gonna happen for me…nor for pretty much everyone else in Sweden. The fact that we’re barred from going to most other countries made me worry that the Ale Stenar, a very famous Iron Age megalith monument in the shape of a stone ship, on the southernmost coast of Sweden would be very crowded.

Photo Club outing to Klagshamn

One of the benefits of being in a photo club is the different outings we go on, to places you probably wouldn’t have either discovered and/or gone to on your own. This weekend I went to the small village called Klagshamn south of Malmö with a few of the other club members. One of us live there, so he provided a very enjoyable and interesting stream of facts about the place and its industrial history as a place where A LOT of limestone had been quarried and processed into quicklime.

Vikings and Odd Sports

These last few weekends this analog film shooter has done quite a bit of digital photography (sacrilege I know!), since I’ve visited a few events where there are more action filled elements and I am not really good at capturing action with my analog cameras…yet.
