One of the nice traditions I’ve enjoyed in the last decade or so (minus Covid years of course) has been to take photos at the local Nerd Parade, put on by the Sci-Fi Bookstore in Malmö, Sweden, to celebrate the inner nerd that resides in all of us. This usually manifests in cosplay from various sci fi/fantasy properties, many of which I do not have a clue about. Many of them are from various anime and manga universes, which I have yet to explore. That’s perfectly okay with me, I just enjoy seeing how multiple generations get to enjoy shared interests and not be mocked or ridiculed for an interest in a certain character, genre or story.

Cosplay in the streets
One of the “rituals” of the year for me in the last few years (except during the Covid years) has been to photograph at the Nerd Parade in Malmö, Sweden in May. It’s an event put on by the local Science Fiction bookstore where people are encouraged to show off their pride in everything nerdy in sci-fi, fantasy and other genres of popular culture.
This year was no exception to that - even though I still have a lot of pictures from my spring USA journey to edit and put into a travel book of the adventure. I guess I needed a little visual break from the epic southwestern desert landscape! So a whole bunch of cosplayers parading through the streets was a very nice distraction!

Once again it was time for the local Science Fiction book store to put on their Nerd Parade through the streets of Malmö, an event put on to celebrate Towel Day (May 25th), to honor the legacy of Douglas Adams, the author of the Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. For practical reasons the parade was moved to Saturday May 27th and the gathering point was outside the City Library, where nerds of all ages and interests began to gather.

My title for this post may sound like something negative, but it is most definitely not! Quite the contrary in fact! I am myself a photo nerd, so to see so many people enjoy their immense interest in certain movie/game or book characters and dressing up as them was a delight. More nerdery is a good thing!

Last weekend the Sci-Fi bookstore in Malmö reopened in a new and bigger locale, and to celebrate this (as well as Geek Pride Day earlier in the week) there was a parade where everyone was encouraged to show off their inner geek, in whatever form that may be.

Such crowds at Sci-Fi World!
I went to the Sci-Fi World event in Malmö, Sweden this weekend with my 12 year old nephew, who is a “nerd-in-training” with a preference for Star Wars, the world of Tolkien and LEGO of all kinds. Of course I brought my camera with the hopes of capturing a few cosplayers there.
